On 1 September 2018 the Ceremonial Meeting on the Day of Pécs and the Ceremonial Senate Meeting of the University of Pécs Opening the Academic Year was jointly celebrated. On this occasion, awards of the city and the university have been conferred.

The Film Studies Department under the aegis of the Faculty of Humanities has launched a new program in film and visual culture. It offers courses for foreign students studying permanently or temporarily at the University of Pécs in any discipline. The program covers a wide range of social, political and individual topics seen through the optic of Eastern-European film makers. 

The University of Pécs has recently been listed among the best universities in the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) of the renowned ShanghaiRanking company. The recently published ranking of academic subjects for 2018 listed the Medical School of the University of Pécs in the field of Clinical Medicine to the prestigious 401-500th place.

Several professors and associate professors of the University of Pécs received prestigious awards for their outstanding contributions on the national holiday of 20 August 2018 in Budapest.

The Academic Bicycle Challenge (ABC) is a new international cycling contest for universities and colleges. The ABC wants to find the most actively cycling higher education institutions worldwide. Our university is joining the ABC in September 2018. Together we will be able to prove that we are awesome on the bikes as well!

Another group of Chinese students arrived at the University of Pécs, this time from the capital of Sichuan prefecture, Chengdu in order to study the European and Hungarian cultural heritage. Thirty-one students and two professors of the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China (UESTC) are staying in Pécs from 30 July - 4 August, where they have lessons and participate in study trips. The academic programme of the summer university is organized by the Faculty of Cultural Sciences, Education and Regional Development; while the complete organization of the event is the task of the Centre for International Relations.

The International Studies Center (ISC) of the University of Pécs, Medical School launched the 19th Hungarian Language and Culture Summer University with 98 participants from abroad on 22 July. Dr. Kata Pelcz, head of the Hungarian Programme was the first to warmly welcome the audience at the official opening ceremony on 23 July. Dr. Reza Hemmati, head of ISC addressed the participants: “I am happy that I can see lots of faces from last year’s summer university programme, and new faces too, so I am glad!”

The University of Pécs welcomed students from the Hangzhou Normal University for the second time. Zhejiang is an Eastern coastal province of China with a population of 51 million, the Hangzhou Normal University is located in the capital of the province, and its notable alumni include influential people: for example Jack Ma, the head of the Alibaba Group.

18 students and 2 professors came to Pécs from the Shanghai Institute of Technology, China in order to learn about the rich European and Hungarian cultural heritage. The academic programme (lessons and field trips) of the summer university held from 15 – 29 July are organized by the Faculty of Cultural Sciences, Education and Regional Development, while the complete organization of the event is the task of the Centre for International Relations. At the opening ceremony on 16 July professors, organizers and Chinese and Hungarian mentors have been introduced to the group of students.

The Centre for International Relations of the University of Pécs organized a summer university programme with the support of CEEPUS with the title: Identities Under Pressure?" Changing European Union, New Global Order in the Making from 28 June – 7 July. 25 students from 8 countries came to Pécs to discuss, how the European Union can maintain its role and competitiveness facing global challenges.
