The Academic Year 2017/2018 was officially closed at the Ceremonial Senate Meeting at the Dr. József Halasy-Nagy Aula. Several awards have been conferred, as well as honorary professor, assistant professor and professor titles, habilitated doctoral titles and doctoral titles. With the hopes of establishing a new tradition, the incoming rector took his ceremonial oath in the presence of former rectors of UP and predecessor institutions.

I. Ferenc Farkas International Scientific ConferenceThe Department of Leadership and Organizational Science at the Faculty of Business and Economics, University of Pécs has organized an international scientific conference to honour the great professor Ferenc Farkas on 7-8 June 2018. More than 80 scholars from 14 countries accepted the invitation to join the conference and to discuss new challenges of business and economics in terms of leadership and management in the 21st century. 

The Faculty of Law, University of Pécs held the I. Nuclear Law Conference in Pécs on 13 June in the prestigious Dr. Halasy-Nagy Hall. Dr. Adrián Fábián, the dean of the Faculty of Law greeted the presenters and the participants. Dr. Gyula Zeller vice-rector said that “the Faculty of Law has always been known for its pioneer work, and its launching of a nuclear law education in Pécs proves that well.”

The London-based Quacquarelli Symonds company has published their latest world university rankings. The University of Pécs was listed as one of the best higher education institutions this year as well, with five other Hungarian universities. The University of Pécs managed to improve its rank in comparison to last year, achieving the 701-750th place according to the British company. Considering Hungarian universities, the University of Pécs shares the third place with Eötvös Loránd University.

Interview with a Fulbright ProfessorJay Nathan is an American professor of management at Tobin College of Business at St. John’s University in New York. He spent two weeks in Pécs in the framework of the Fulbright Specialist Program. It was my pleasure to have a conversation with him about globalisation, success and travel. In addition, as he has a soft spot for Hungary, before leaving, he told me with a big smile that he would hopefully come back and would like to found a scholarship for students to have the opportunity to take part in exchange programmes between Hungary and the USA. 

New rectors have been appointed to lead the Hungarian Dance Academy, the University of Szeged, the University of Pécs and Semmelweis University – announced the Hungarian Official Gazette on 24 May 2018.

The European Clinical Research Infrastructure Network (ECRIN) and its Hungarian national scientific partner – Hungarian Clinical Research Infrastructure Network (HECRIN) organized the International Clinical Trials Day 2018 (ICTD) on 15 May in Budapest. Innovation and its effects on international trials have been the main topic of discussion.

The University of Pécs has achieved the prestigious 127th place in the distinguished Times Higher Education (THE) Emerging Economies University Rankings, comparing institutions of 50 emerging countries in an international ranking. By achieving this position, the University of Pécs has become the best university in Hungary outside the capital - the only institution ranked better is the Semmelweis University. 

The Senate of the University of Pécs conferred the prestigious Honoris Causa title upon dr. Sándor Csányi, economist, businessman, chairman and chief executive of OTP Bank Group. Through this event, he became a member of an “elite group”, that has members such as Count Albert Apponyi, Count Kuno Klebelsberg, Otto Habsburg, Plácido Domingo or Donald Tusk.
