Rector Attila Miseta greeted the professors of the University of Pécs at the New Year’s Professorial Meeting on 9 January 2019, which was held at the Medical School this year. He summarized the efforts made for internationalization in 2018, in which the Stipendium Hungaricum scholarship programme plays an important role. He encouraged the professors to share their knowledge with an international audience as well. “Help the students, inspire them!” – said the rector, explaining that this should be the most important task of a professor.

The University of Pécs was ranked 140th on the list of UI GreenMetric University Ranking comparing 719 higher education institutions from all over the world. The press release published on 19 December 2018 in Depok, Indonesia shows that with 39 places better than last year, the University of Pécs is the second “greenest” university of Hungary according to this ranking.

The University of Pécs dedicated special attention to the families of its more than six thousand employees in 2018 in the form of a series of events. The various events offered unique opportunities for the whole family: from dragon boat race, ice-skating to a cooking show with a gastro blogger and sommelier, Márk Mikes. The closing event was held on 6 December, the day of St. Nicholas. The University of Pécs has recently won the prestigious “Responsible Employer of the Year 2018”, in which the Year of Families series played an important role.

The plans have been completed, the construction permit has been obtained, and the foundation work has already begun: on 7 December, it was time for the foundation stone of the new Education and Research block of the Medical Faculty – to be built within the framework of the Modern Cities Programme – to be laid.The foundation and the time capsule was ceremonially laid by State Secretary for Education Dr. József Bódis, Rector of the University of Pécs Dr. Attila Miseta, Mayor of Pécs Dr. Zsolt Páva, Chancellor Zoltán Jenei, Dean Dr. Miklós Nyitrai and ZÁÉV CEO Imre Peresztegi.

Sixty registered participants pitched their business ideas in 10 minutes to 20 professionals, explaining why it is worth the investment at the Inspiration Day of the University of Pécs on 3 December. The organizers of the event gave useful advice for developing business ideas, they also introduced two case studies, demonstrating this way that success can be achieved. The event held at the Faculty of Business and Economics was truly interdisciplinary, perfect for exchanging ideas, networking and inspiration.

On 21 November in the Centre for Knowledge of the University of Pécs three, experienced Russian diplomats participated in a round table discussion. Two of them were former ambassadors: Igor Savolsky Sergeyevich as well as Vladimir Dmitrievich Dorokhin; and Vladimir Mikhail Mikhailovich served as the personal translator to Mikhail Gorbachev, the last general secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union. The audience got a glimpse into their career and the dynamics of Russian-Hungarian connections.

A student of the Faculty of Law, University of Pécs, Kata Bárdos has won the international artificial intelligence chatbot development competition organized by iLex and IBM in October 2018. The final winner was chosen from 2,500 participants from ten countries. During the contest, students had to train LEXI, a virtual assistant developed by iLex using IBM Watson Assistant technology. The aim of the programme was to offer an insight to the new opportunities created by the artificial intelligence revolution.

The University of Pécs held a Ceremonial Senate Meeting on 8 November 2018. celebrating the Day of Hungarian Science. At the Meeting, two new honorary doctor have been inaugurated, and university awards and honours have been conferred as well.
