Nearly 400 students gathered on 17 September in the Dr. Romhányi György Hall of the Medical School to receive their white coats. Rector Attila Miseta, as well as Dean Miklós Nyitrai congratulated everyone for successfully finishing the first two years of university and he wished endurance for the upcoming years in order to become great doctors. The presidents of the English, German and the Hungarian Student Council emphasized this coat is more than just an object, it is a symbol of their future.

European Researchers’ Night is an open science event that makes science and the work of scientists familiar to audiences all over Europe. In 2018, it was held in around 300 cities simultaneously across Europe on 28 September, Pécs being one of them. Over the course of the day and throughout the night, children, adolescents, adults, older people, students and entrepreneurs had the opportunity to get to know more about science through workshops, lectures and laboratory visits at the University of Pécs.

The Damjanich Dormitory has been renewed in the framework of the Modern Cities Programme from a budget of 430 million Forints. The refurbished dormitory was inaugurated on 17 September, offering 100 new places – making quality accommodation available for students: the rooms are equipped with large windows, modern furniture, shower cabins, toilets, two separate, spacious beds. For students with reduced mobility there are special rooms available free of steps and thresholds, with special bathrooms; and they can enter the building with the help of an elevator.

Last year, a new tradition was established: adding a fleur-de-lis (Anjou-lily) figurine to the palette placed in the Senate room at the start of every academic year.

The Centre for International Relations held an orientation day on 10 September for the Stipendium Hungaricum scholarship students at the Centre for Learning, where many international students gathered. The lecture was very informative and enjoyable; the freshmen had the opportunity to ask questions afterwards.

The ground floor lecture hall of the Center for Learning was completely filled on 3 September with the 177 exchange students for whom an Orientation Day was organized. The students come from 35 countries from 75 partner institutions of the University of Pécs, each one of our 10 faculties are hosting some of them. At the event organized by the Centre of International Relations the Erasmus+ programme coordinators have also been present from every faculty.

Every Saturday at 5pm there will be an English language Roman Catholic Mass held in the Sacred Heart Church at Ifjúság street. Last semester the mass was very popular, and we are glad to continue this tradition during term-time.

The Medical School and the Faculty of Pharmacy organized the Orientation Days for their 850 freshmen. The gathering was held at the Szentágothai Research Centre. On 28 August the German and English programme students and on 29 August the Hungarian programme students have been informed about everything they have to know at the start of their academic year.

A unique, historical university lecture room was reconstructed and inaugurated at the Faculty of Law, only found in Bologna, Italy and Pécs, Hungary – said Dr. László Korinek, professor emeritus, who envisioned this room, in his inauguration speech.
