Huge Crowd at the Orientation Days of the Medical School and Faculty of Pharmacy

The Medical School and the Faculty of Pharmacy organized the Orientation Days for their 850 freshmen. The gathering was held at the Szentágothai Research Centre. On 28 August the German and English programme students and on 29 August the Hungarian programme students have been informed about everything they have to know at the start of their academic year.

Nearly 40 booths filled the hall of the Science Building, where students were informed about different services offered at the University of Pécs. The first day was dedicated to the international students of the German and English language programmes. In all great lecture halls of the building, including the one named after the architect who designed the building, Prof. Zoltán Bachman, representatives of different programmes, services gave information-rich presentations. Representatives of the Registrar’s Office, Student Service Offices and of the Student Council shared the most important details with students. After the info-sessions, the 850 enrolled newcomers could get further information at the booths. Most of them eagerly visited all the booths, and saying that there was a huge crowd is not an exaggeration, thanks to the fact that for freshmen, participation at the event was mandatory.

“Our aim was to offer help in starting the academic year, how to enrol, how to find health services, how to use Neptun and how to register for courses. We think it is very important for them to get acquainted with the different libraries, the Support Service, the Legal Aid programme, the sports programmes offered by the Institute of Sport Sciences and Physical Education, all of which are necessary for the students in order to have a successful academic life” – said Dr. Zsófia Duga, the head of the Admission and Hungarian Student Service Center. “The representatives of various student organizations have been present at faculty as well as university levels, the Dancing University, the UnivPécs magazine and Confabula. We tried to introduce the diverse range of services offered by the university, that there is life outside the university. These services help them to achieve and maintain their physical and mental health. The Police have also been present; they offered advice on various safety issues, such as bicycle rules and safety, and they informed the students about the ‘Kezedben a biztonságod’ (‘Your safety in your hands’) app” – Zsófia Duga told UnivPécs.

There is extra emphasis on informing not only the Hungarian students, but students from abroad especially, since coming from a different culture, they are not only starting university, they are in a different country, sometimes thousands of kilometres away from their homes. “We have to give them a warm welcome, and offer them services, so that they can also find their place here” – emphasized Dr. Zsófia Duga.
