Unique Medieval Lecture Room Inaugurated at the Faculty of Law
A unique, historical university lecture room was reconstructed and inaugurated at the Faculty of Law, only found in Bologna, Italy and Pécs, Hungary – said Dr. László Korinek, professor emeritus, who envisioned this room, in his inauguration speech.
The idea of this Studium Generale lecture room was born twenty years ago, and the inauguration of it took place on 3 September 2018 at the Faculty of Law, University of Pécs.
The design of the indoor space was done by Dr. Zsófia Lukács, interior designer, interior design researcher, who said that the research was the most intriguing part of the task. She was able to rectonstruct the furniture and the look of interior based on the illustrations in the historical excerpts of the medieval university.
The aim of the nearly twenty million HUF investment is to give students an introduction into the medieval higher education and the atmosphere through interactive presentations about the history of the university with the help of modern technology stylishly hidden behind the antique wooden wall panels. The room is equipped with Wi-Fi access, electric wall-sockets for laptops, tablets – all hidden behind the medieval wooden panels, almost invisible to the visitors, thereby preserving the medieval atmosphere, however at the same time using the necessities of the 21st century.
The room is decorated with real medieval objects, such as a university textbook from 1577 with original inscriptions by students, carved stones from the Romanesque cathedral, and a silver denarius forged in Pécs in the same historical period.
Dr. Adrián Fábián, the dean of the Faculty emphasized that the room will primarily serve educational purposes, however, visitors are also welcome. Wearing the surfaces flat is going to be the task of students and visitors, so the patina has to be added by modern people to this medieval relic.
