International Ranking: UP's Success
The University of Pécs has achieved the prestigious 127th place in the distinguished Times Higher Education (THE) Emerging Economies University Rankings, comparing institutions of 50 emerging countries in an international ranking. By achieving this position, the University of Pécs has become the best university in Hungary outside the capital - the only institution ranked better is the Semmelweis University.
THE considers institutions from the 50 countries classified as emerging economies (advanced and secondary) or “frontier economies” by FTSE (Financial Times and Stock Exchange). But institutions from only 42 of these countries made the final top 378 list. So our institution’s place in this ranking of the best research-led universities among the emerging economy nations is a significant achievement. Furthermore the University of Pécs, celebrating the 650th anniversary of it's foundation only last year, is in the first third of this ranking - preceded only by Semmelweis in Hungary.
The ranking uses the same 13 rigorous performance indicators as the THE World University Rankings, examining each university’s strengths against all of its core missions – teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook. But the methodology has been carefully recalibrated to better reflect the characteristics and development priorities of universities in emerging economies. More weight is given, for example, to a university’s industry links and international outlook.
Gyula Berke, the vice-rector of the University of Pécs for education emphasized in connection with the ranking: "We are evaluated every year in international rankings, and it seems to become a trend that we have a secure place in the strong middle section. This is a respectable achievement, since industry partnerships - which mean a lot in this comparison - are significantly more difficult to establish in the Southern Transdanubian region, than in the case of higher educational institutions more to the North. Still, we continue to develop, and through the developments of the Modern Cities Programme we will develop our inftrastructure up to the standards of our education, research and health care." - said Gyula Berke.
