The University of Pécs (UP) has been awarded with the prestigious Oxford Europe Business Assembly’s (EBA) award in the United Kingdom. This price had never been given to any Hungarian higher education institution before. The award was received in Oxford this week by Prof. József Bódis, rector of UP.

Oxford Europe Business Assembly’s aim is to foster and develop social partnerships between different organisations and institutions and therefore it builds and manages networks. Ever since it has been established, it has initiated several programmes to especially address and involve the higher education sector. The organisation donates awards in different categories to the business and higher education sectors, this year the “Best Regional University” title had been awarded to the University of Pécs – first among Hungarian universities.

The awards ceremony in Oxford was not only followed in the United Kingdom, but – as this year there were participants from more than 30 countries and many of the organisation’s initiations have grown into well-known brands in the last 15 years – the gala evening has drawn international attention too. Another awardee of the same category was the Italian Brescia University.

The award of the Best Regional University is given by EBA to the selected higher education and research institutions among the patented International Socrates Awards and the leader of the selected institution receives a special recognition too. The personal recognition is called ’Best Leader of the Year’ and it goes to the heads of institutions in the higher education or research fields – in this case to our rector. After an external nomination it is the presidency of the Oxford-based organisation who decides on the winners, who are awarded at the ceremony in Oxford each year.

As József Bódis, rector of the University of Pécs said at the reception of the award: „It is an honour to receive this recognition, and I hope with it, our University will be able to further strengthen its role and visibility in international higher education and research. It continues to remain one of our strategic aims to internationalise our University, to double the number of international students to 5000. Our position in this year’s international higher educational rankings and this award also support my belief that this is a realistic aim.”
