Full House at the Orientation Day for Exchange students
The Centre of Internationalization and Connections (CIC) of the University of Pécs organized a well-attended Central Orientation Day for the newly arrived 103 exchange students on 4 February 2019 in the Centre for Knowledge, with the participation of the Erasmus+ coordinators.
Ms. Judit Németh, the Head of the Mobility and Scholarship programmes, and Institutional Erasmus+ Coordinator of the University of Pécs greeted the audience. On behalf of the leadership of the University of Pécs Dr. István Tarrósy, the Director of the Centre for Internationalization and Connections welcomed the international exchange students, who are joining the University of Pécs for the spring semester of the 2018/19 academic year. They arrived with Erasmus+ scholarship, credit mobility, Makovecz scholarship, Study Abroad and other exchange programmes from our partner universities. The newly arrived students are coming from 33 countries, 57 partner institutions of the University, and they are enrolled at the 10 faculties.
The Director informed the students about the widespread international connections of the University of Pécs, and highlighted that more than 4,200 international students are currently studying in Pécs, representing more than a 100 countries of the world. “It is a strategic goal of the University of Pécs is to have as many international students as possible” – added Dr. Tarrósy, inviting the newly arrived students to join the events organized by the University, such as the International Spring starting with the popular International Evening.
Péter Árvai, Deputy Director of CIC gave an introductory lecture about the history of Hungary, focusing on Pécs, thereby informing the students of the cultural heritage of this beautiful city, which has also won the prestigious title of European Capital of Culture in 2010, as well as the UNESCO "Learning City" title in 2017. He explained important duties of the students, theoretical as well as technical issues, e.g. how to obtain a student card, a residence permit, where they can go to learn Hungarian, or how to join the Cultural Sensitivity Courses offered by the University of Pécs. The Deputy Director also gave them some advice: “Go to classes, communicate in every areas of your lives, and have fun while being here!”
Last, but not least, Milán Töltősi, the president of Erasmus Student Network in Pécs (ESN) shared valuable information about the buddy programme, and the various programmes they are organizing in this semester, such as a trip to Budapest as well as to Italy. After the information-rich presentations, students could participate in a reception and they could mingle, since as the ESN president said, fellow-students from all over the world will become almost like a family to each other, supporting and helping each other.
