Visit of the Irish Ambassador in Pécs

Kevin Dowling, Ambassador of Ireland in Budapest came to Pécs in May, 2014. During his two-day visit, his delegation met the leaders of the city and the University of Pécs. The Ambassador opened the fascinating exhibition about W.B. Yeats, Irish Nobel prize holder poet organised by the university’s Faculty of Humanities. Mr. Dowling also held a lecture about the significance of Irish literature.

In addition to the academic programme points, representatives of the embassy met the leaders of the city of Pécs to discuss the city's educational and cultural diversity.

After visiting the Zsolnay Cultural Quarter, the delegation went to see the Kodály Center. Based on his first impressions about the cathedral of Pécs, the early Christian tombs and the Csontváry Museum, the Irish ambassador said: "I am impressed by the historical and cultural richness of the city of Pécs. The primary purpose of my visit was to renew our relationship with the Irish Research Centre of the University of Pécs, and to give a presentation about Irish literature on the occasion of the lately opened Yeats exhibition. With the university leadership we negotiated about future cooperation opportunities. I have already expressed my admiration towards Pécs's beauty to the mayor of the city, most of all the Kodály Centre and the Zsolnay Cultural Quarter had a hold on me. We are grateful to the city and the university for the generous hospitality, and we are looking forward to further collaboration."
