Let the countdown begin! The UP is 650 years old in 2017
The University of Pécs will celebrate the 650th anniversary of its foundation in 2017 and on this occasion will hold a series of jubilee events which will be important for the city of Pécs, for the South Transdanubian Region and for the whole country, Hungary.

The history of higher education in Hungary dates back to 1367, when Louis the Great initiated the establishment of a university in the episcopal city of Pécs. As a result of an integration process of several stages, the University of Pécs was founded. Today, this university is one of the largest institutions higher education in Hungary with the widest spectrum of teaching and research activities, included ten faculties.
A historic wave of university foundations during the second half of the 14th century in Central Europe resulted in the establishment of the universities in Prague (1348), Cracow (1364), Vienna (1465) and Pécs (1367) followed a uniform procedure stipulated by the Holy See under Pope Urban V (1362-1370). After a comprehensive investigation of the High Court of Justice, the charter of the university was sent along with the documents on the privileges that are provided by the city for the members of the university. In the case of Pécs, the city was unable to provide the latter documents, as the citizens of Pécs as an episcopal civitas were all along under the jurisdiction of the bishop of Pécs. Therefore it must have been the founder, the bishop himself who guaranteed the privileges of the professors and students of the university. The papal bull of September 1st 1367 by Pope Urban V, ordaining the studium generale in Pécs, permitted the king of Hungary, Louis the Great to establish the university.
The first official step of the celebration of the 650th jubilee, the Countdown Day (650 days before the Jubilee 650) will be held on 20th of November 2015. During the course of the following two years, many programs will be available for the audience such as significant international congresses, scientific meetings, art festivals and sport events.
The main event will be held on the 1st of September 2017 which will not just be the Day of the Jubilee, but as well the Day of Pécs. The anniversary will be in association with the Mayor's Office of Pécs and the Episcopate of Pécs.
