As a student of the University of Pécs, you need to be aware of some rules and orders which will shape your life as a member of our academic community. Read further and get to know the institutional hierarchy and the academic calendar of the UP. Learn about grades and exams, as well as vital registration rules!
Structure and Hierarchy
Faculties ( - or in certain cases, institutes) are the smallest units in the UP’s university structure organized within a particular branch of science, having their own administration. The UP has 10 faculties (9 with a seat in Pécs and 1 with a seat in Szekszárd). Departments within each faculty have the right to decide on the timetable of lectures and seminars and the range of courses offered.
The hierarchy of teachers:
- Assistant lecturer (in Hungarian: tanársegéd): Generally a young teacher at the beginning of his or her career entrusted with conducting practical sessions and seminars.
- Senior lecturer (in Hungarian: adjunktus): A lecturer with a doctoral degree who has relative freedom in deciding the material for his or her lectures and in evaluating theses.
- Associate professor (in Hungarian: docens): The task of an associate professor is to give lectures, preside over exam committees and supervise doctoral theses.
- (Full) Professor (in Hungarian: egyetemi tanár): The highest teaching position in the hierarchy of higher education.
Grades and Exams
At the Hungarian universities, education is provided in a system of seminars and lectures. Lectures are held for wider audiences where the attendance is recommended, but usually not obligatory. At the end of the semester students have to pass written or oral examinations. Seminars are usually more informal study groups for 10-20 students, where there is room for individual consultation, discussion of the material and solving exercises. They usually conclude with an independently written paper or an examination. The grading system generally used by Hungarian higher education institutions is the following:
- The highest grade is 5 excellent
-
Grade 4 is good
-
Grade 3 is average
-
Grade 2 is a pass
-
Grade 1 is a fail meaning that the course must be repeated
Hungarian Student ID card
Exchange and international students are provided with a student ID card with which they can have the same advantages as Hungarian students e.g. reduced fares for all public transport, reduced-price entrance tickets for museums, Youth Hostel accommodation and library membership, sport facilities for free of charge.
Academic calendar
The academic year is divided into two semesters. At the end of each, students have special exam periods, during which they take oral or written exams. Faculties of the UP may have different schedules about starting and finishing semesters and breaks throughout the academic year. As one of our foreign students, our academic calendar may be useful for you when planning your exams and travels home.
