National Brain Research Programme final conference

The objective of NBR is to improve and expand the already outstanding national university, clinical and academic research sites, to strengthen the connections between  the related national industrial research and development, to enhance the international competitiveness of Hungarian brain research and to lay the foundations for its long-term social and economic expedience. Exploration of the brain is one of the greatest intellectual challenges which is essential for Hungary as well as for every developed society in our era.

A fundamental goal of brain researchers is to provide knowledge for the sake of the healthy operation of the human brain.

Academic member Tamás Freund (honoured with “The Brain Prize Award”) has been requested to chair the “National Brain Research Programme” (NBR), who is the director of the Institute of Experimental Medicine of the Hungarian National Academy, and the former president of Federation of European Neuroscience Societies (FENS); a member of President of the EU Commission J.M. Barroso's Science and Technology Advisory Council. Via Professor Freund and the  Institute of Experimental Medicine, NBR is connected to the so far largest-scale joint European research endeavour, the “Human Brain Project” initiated within the framework of the FET flagship programme of the EU Commission, in the preparation of which the members of the consortium have taken part from the beginnings.

NBR has focussed on five thematic pillars, with regard to scientific actualities and Hungarian circumstances. These pillars and their chairs and co-chairs are the following: Discovery research – Zoltán Nusser and Gábor Tamás; clinical neuroscience research – Tamás Dóczi, István Bitter, László Vécsei; research connected to pharmaceuticals – Zsolt Szombathelyi and György Keserű; bionics and infobionics – István Ulbert and Loránd Erőss, social challenges – Ferenc Oberfrank and László Csiba.
