The National Blood Donation Competition was launched in 2005 with the aim of the Hungarian Red Cross and the National Blood Service to make more young people join the blood donation movement and become a regular donor.

The winning institution of the "bloody fight" was the one which was capable of activating the highest proportion of its full-time students to become blood donors during the entire academic year.
In the year 2013/14, a total number of 38 higher education institutions competed in three categories: less than 1 000 participants, between 1 000 and 10 000, and over 10 000. The University of Pécs competed in the last, greatest category and ended up in the second best place.

Besides blood donation, the campaign emphasized the importance of role models and healthy lifestyle. Endorsers of the 8th National Higher Education Blood Donation Competition were Zsuzsanna Jakabos, European Champion and Olympic swimmer andTamás Rozsonits, student of the Pázmány Péter Catholic University, who has been a regular blood donor since he was 18.
