Dr. Gabriel Elgavish is professor at the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Genetics University of Alabama at Birmingham and co-professor of the Institute of Internal Medicine and Cardiology. He was born in Hungary in 1942 but soon emigrated to Israel. He earned his basic degree in 1967 at the Chemistry Department of the Hebrew University where he later completed his Master's degree in 1972. He earned his Ph.D. degree in 1978 at the Wizmann Institute in NMR spectroscopy. He later settled down in the United States of America. He has been working for the Department of Biochemistry of the University of Alabama at Birmingham since 1981.
In the last fifteen years Professor Elgavish has played a key role in the training of the Medical School's young instructors and in their academic progress. Many colleagues of the Heart Institute spent years in his laboratory and most of them earned their PhD degrees under his guidance.
Dr. Elgavish has done pioneering work in the development of myocardial NMR and MRI technologies and an internationally recognized, excellent expert. As a compatriot of our country, he maintains excellent ongoing relations with the Hungarian Institute of Nuclear Medicine. His cooperation with the colleagues of the Heart Institute is also outstanding.
